๐ Wimauma History
In 1902, Wimauma was founded by Captain C. H. Davis who chose the location due to its proximity to the 55-mile railroad from Durant to Manatee County. Construction on the railroad began in 1895 and also went into Sarasota.
The railroad changed names several times throughout the years. It began in 1902 as the United States & West Indies Railroad and Steamship Company, was renamed the Florida West Shore Railway in 1903, and finally became the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1909.
Though the community was founded due to the importance of the railroad, the operation ceased to run through Wimauma in 1968, and the tracks were subsequently removed.
