🍍 Sarasota New Year’s Eve Pineapple Drop

The Sarasota Downtown Enrichment Association is hosting the annual Pineapple Drop and block party. The festivities include rides and games at 5 Points Park, live music at Main Street & Lemon, and an incredible fireworks display on Sarasota Bay.

🎶 Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne was officially recorded by the 18th-century poet Robert Burns. Auld Lang Syne translates into For Old Times’ Sake. The song celebrates friendships and encourages us to look back over the past year.

The Scottish tradition is to stand in a circle and hold hands while singing Auld Lang Syne. At the last verse that begins with, “And there’s a hand, my trusty friend,” the people cross their arms so that their opposite hands are holding those of their neighbors’ hands. As the song ends, those gathered hurry to the center of the circle in celebration.

During the Renaissance period, people would attend masquerade balls to celebrate the new year. At midnight, everyone would remove their masks. A kiss would ensure that any evil spirits or forces from the past year would not make it into the new one.
